Terrorist leaders are not benevolent men inclined to make peace but vicious bullies. The IRA was the Islamic State of its day. Northern Ireland, Iraq, and Afghanistan are similar wars. In these, an insurgency like the IRA/Sinn Féin mix is the main problem.
A proven solution is the rule of law, where police intelligence dominates because investigative practices fail. The approach - widely misrepresented and commonly misunderstood - devastated the IRA. Some terrorists were killed, most were in prison, many were on the run, and the rest feared the same fate. The IRA was forced into a ceasefire.
Had this been disclosed in promoting the peace, nations would have benefited and lives saved. But the political endgame was botched. Unrepentant insurgents in government tainted security to sanitise their past. IRA leaders became peacemakers. Others contemplating conflict watched. Al-Qaeda was encouraged. New York's twin towers stood tall. Peace had a price.

This reviewer has every reason to believe that British intelligence operations were ultimately very successful against the Republican Army. However, this account by a former PSNI Special Branch officer is little more than a typical unionist polemic, and it provides very little specific information about Special Branch, Security Service or military intelligence operations. Don't waste your money.Product details

Secret Victory The Intelligence War That Beat the IRA (Audible Audio Edition) Dr William Matchett Nick Cracknell WRM Consultancy Limited Books Reviews
Absolutely informative and a must read for anyone with an interest in counter terrorism.
As a history buff, I'm ashamed to say that I didn't know much about the IRA before reading this book. Secret Victory gives an insightful and captivating insider's look into how the IRA was defeated. Matchett provides a detailed and thought-provoking explanation of terrorism and conflict, a topic that is all-too relevant across the globe today.
As a career practitioner in counter-terrorism, intelligence, and conflict policing, Dr. William Matchett has drawn from his personal wealth of knowledge and experience in writing this book. Examining the effective security response to the Northern Ireland conflict, it is essential reading for anyone who wishes to understand the true nature of irregular warfare and counter-insurgency. In an international context, it provides valuable lessons and accounts in how the "Northern Ireland Model" of policing can be used effectively to deal with the current threat from radicalized terrorism. A well written and compelling account of how the Provisonal IRA were successfully infiltrated and forced to the negotiating table.
Extremely biased piece. Looked at the Troubles as a one encompassing event instead of an ever-changing, complex conflict. This piece utterly fails to educate the reader on the origin of the Troubles; subjective writing misleads the reader into thinking that military action/policing operations lead to the Belfast Agreement. Complete rubbish and classic revisionist history. This book does a complete dis-service to all the peacemakers on both sides of the conflict.
This is simply a brilliant book, if infuriating at times, about the missing dimension of ‘The Troubles’ in Northern Ireland 1969-1999. What marks this book out then? First and foremost it is an insider's account and perspective being a RUC (police) Special Branch officer. Note it is minus notes and sources, which are in his PhD thesis. Everyone gets a mention, including the Army and some British politicians.
There is a mass of detail. I would draw attention to him writing 60% of gathered intelligence came from agents (pg. 22), 20% technical, 15% surveillance and 5% routine policing & open sources (pg. 98). Arrests occurred 96% of the time (pg.23) and the specialist uniformed support unit (E4 HMSU) had an impressive record 99.5% of covert operations confronting armed terrorists resulted in arrests (pg.220). ‘Agents were the decisive factor’ and eventually surveillance, armed response and tactical co-ordination were added – a combination that forced PIRA to capitulate (pg.112).
In places controversial, notably the "shoot to kill" allegations and the realities of running agents within a terrorist group. Just whether anyone really learnt any lessons is a moot point.
Very informative and eye opening to the troublers
